Anti-imperial Block of Nations

In the third episode of this season, we will talk about the genocide of the Circassian people, who were the first of the nations of the North Caucasus to enter into confrontation with the Russian Empire. This is the most geographically wide episode. There is no main character here and there is no one republic because now the Circassians are scattered throughout almost the entire North Caucasus. Together we will travel back hundreds of years and explain how the imperial army fought with the Circassians and pushed them further and further from their native lands. The shores of the Black Sea became the site of a national tragedy for the people: from here, Circassians who fled from persecution were taken by ships of another, Ottoman empire, and taken to the territory of modern Turkey. During a hundred years of war, in the territories once inhabited by Circassians, there were almost no representatives of this nation left. Most were killed or deported. Until now, Circassians consider May 21 as a mourning date, when the Caucasian War formally ended.

Inside you will hear:

– Why the Russian Empire could not leave the Circassians on their land, like many other conquered nations;

— Why did the Ottoman Empire take the Circassians to its territory, how the deportation took place and how the life of the Circassians developed overseas;

— How many Circassians once lived in Russia and how many remained after the war and deportation;

— How the genocide of the Circassians resonates in the modern political life of Russia and other countries.
