The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs’ punitive operations in the Chechen Republic are known for their particular brutality. They were carried out by General Kulikov, but modern Russian democrats are schizophrenic. Concentration camps, torture and purges are horrific. Meanwhile, the reformist government of Yeltsin, Gaidar, and Chernomyrdin represents a bright spot in the history of young Russian democracy. And so we live. Цho appointed the punitive Kulikov to his post, who signed the decrees, who ordered the purges, who started the war? It’s best not to recall all of this, otherwise, it could quickly lead to the anti-war committees, or rather, to their organisers.
Watch this extensive interview with Russian Interior Minister Kulikov; it’s very useful. It’s not just about the war, but also about the 1996 elections and the dissolution of parliament. It’s excellent material for an indictment of Yeltsin’s democracy. The interview was recorded by Yan Vizenberg for an exhibition at the Yeltsin Centre. So it’s no surprise that his questions to the killer are full of respect. You know our attitude toward this gang; it’s been expressed repeatedly in our programmes. Nevertheless, we thought this material might be useful for those interested in history.
