The Second Western District Military Court found Moscow resident Nikolai Kolin guilty and sentenced him to 14 years in prison for transferring 10,000 rubles to the Russian Volunteer Corps (RVC) fighting on the side of Ukraine, Avtozak LIVE writes.
Kolin was found guilty under Article 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (High Treason). During the parties’ debate, the prosecutor asked for 21 years of imprisonment and a fine of 500 thousand rubles for the man.
In November 2023, the Second Western District Military Court recognized the RDC as a terrorist organization and sentenced its leader Denis Kapustin in absentia to life imprisonment. Kapustin, 39, was found guilty of treason and terrorist activity. After that, the FSB added the RDC to the list of terrorist organizations.
In early July, Verstka reported that at least 54 Russians had become defendants in cases of attempts to join the Freedom of Russia Legion and the Russian Volunteer Corps (RVC). Forty-three people were defendants in cases related to Freedom of Russia, and nine in cases related to the RVC. Two more detainees tried to join both military organizations at once. At the same time, as Verstka clarifies, the real number of those being prosecuted may be higher, since Russian courts sometimes conceal information about such cases.
The most common article under which cases were initiated was treason or preparation for it (23 in total). In nine cases, the detainees were also charged under terrorist articles – 205, 205.2, and 205.5 of the Criminal Code. Another ten people were charged with participation in an illegal armed formation or preparation for it (Article 208 of the Criminal Code).
