Background :
- Threatening calls to protesters against the “foreign agents” law began in Georgia this week, and there were several serious attacks on opposition politicians and activists. At the same time, the authorities announced their intention to create a “public list” of persons they accuse of “inciting violence” in the context of protests against the adoption of the law.
- The pressure on the Georgian authorities from the Western partners increased. The EU ambassadors discussed how adopting the scandalous project could affect Georgia’s European integration. It was unofficially reported that the EU does not rule out revising the visa-free regime for Georgia if the law is passed.
- The countries of Northern Europe and the Baltics issued a joint statement, in which they warned that the Georgian authorities have chosen an alarming trajectory that is destroying Georgia’s European future. Additional warnings came from the White House and the US Congress.
- In response to the pressure, the Prime Minister of Georgia hinted that the “Georgian Dream” is ready for small concessions in the text of the project, but rejected the possibility of significant changes.
