The Tbilisi City Court has ordered the arrest of the leader of the opposition Coalition for Change, Nika Gvaramia, in a case of failure to comply with the demands of the parliamentary investigative commission (Article 349 of the Criminal Code), Ekho Kavkaza reports.
The commission “investigates” crimes committed by officials during the presidency of Mikheil Saakashvili from 2003 to 2012. Several people were charged for refusing to attend its sessions, and the court chose bail as a preventive measure.
Gvaramia was given 30 thousand lari, which is about 10,800 dollars. He, like three other oppositionists, refused to pay it. The bail payment period expired on 7 June. The politician did not appear in court to change the preventive measure.
“The case is fabricated and brought against all those politicians who did not appear before the commission, which was created in defiance of the Constitution. I obey the Constitution of Georgia, not the constitution of the “dream” [the ruling Georgian Dream party],” he said. Later, he came to the pretrial detention centre building.
In a similar case, the co-chairman of the Akhali party, Nika Melia, former Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Okruashvili and the leader of the opposition Girchi party, Zurab Japaridze, were arrested earlier. They also refused to pay the bail set by the court.
