The US State Department has ordered American diplomats to oppose the adoption of a resolution at the UN to lift the US embargo against Cuba. Among the reasons given are, in particular, Cuba’s support for Russia’s war against Ukraine, Reuters reports, referring to the text of a State Department cable seen by the agency.
“As part of the administration’s campaign, US diplomats will tell countries that the Cuban government is actively supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, providing up to 5,000 Cubans fighting on the side of Moscow’s forces,” Reuters writes.
According to the agency, in an unclassified cable dated 2 October, sent to dozens of American diplomatic missions, American diplomats were instructed to urge governments to oppose this non-binding resolution to lift the US embargo on Cuba, which has been adopted by the UN General Assembly by a large majority every year since 1992. Last year, the General Assembly adopted the resolution, which was voted in favour of by 187 countries. The United States and Israel were the only countries to vote against, and Moldova abstained.
