The Moscow stock market fell sharply after Donald Trump’s statements about the possible tightening of sanctions against Russia.
This is reported by The Moscow Times.
The publication notes that in just a few hours of trading, the Mossberg index lost 1.51%, and capitalization decreased by 100 billion rubles ($1.1 billion).
Gazprom shares suffered the most, falling 3.5%. Sberbank and VTB shares lost 1.5% and 2.4%, respectively. The pressure intensified after information about the EU’s preparations to disconnect another 20 Russian banks from SWIFT.
Among the leaders of the decline were also Sovcomflot (-2.6%), Severstal (-2%), Aeroflot and Magnit (-2.2%). Rosneft shares fell by 1.4%.
PSB analyst Yevgeny Loktyukhov explains the situation by “the worsening geopolitical background and the delay in negotiations on Ukraine.”
According to Alor Broker analyst Alexei Antonov, the main reasons for the decline lie in the Russian economy: “Most large companies recorded a decline in financial indicators, and some became unprofitable. The second quarter promises to be even worse for the market as a whole.”
In addition, the ruble remains strong, hitting exporters’ revenue, which accounts for over 50% of the index. Yaroslav Kabakov, director of strategy at Finam, notes: “This is causing a revaluation of companies in metallurgy, oil, fertilizers and agricultural products.”
Let us remind you:
The press secretary of the Russian ruler, Dmitry Peskov, commented on the statements of US President Donald Trump, who stated that Vladimir Putin had “absolutely gone crazy” when commenting on the recent air strikes on Ukraine.
Shortly before this, Trump, while talking to reporters, stated that he was deeply dissatisfied with the actions of Vladimir Putin and emphasized that he did not understand the reasons for the current actions of the Russian ruler.
After that, Trump sharply characterized Putin on his social network Truth Social, stating that he had “absolutely gone crazy” and warned that if he tried to seize all of Ukraine, it would lead to the “fall” of Russia.
The Russian stock and currency markets are sharply lower in trading, on news that ceasefire talks in Ukraine have been cancelled.
